Dalton, myspace
Texas rockers Dalton from Selectric Records will get a lot of attention with this exciting debut, “Taste the Sky.”

Begun by two Dalton brothers - Preston (guitar/vocals) and Spencer (drummer/vocals) - who found their strong sense of calling at a Delirious worship conference, they bring songwriting skills beyond their years to their fresh arena-rock sound. Think Jimmy Eat World meets Sanctus Real.

The album title comes from an earlier art sketch Preston had done, a collage based on 1 Corinthians 15:52, symbolizing our hope as believers in the return of Christ. The band wants to encourage believers to 'taste the sky" and be all they can be, fully living up to the potential God gives each of us. But lest you think they are lyrically stunted and overly church-oriented, let me just say their message is intelligently presented, embracing the mysteries of God. Joined by fellow Texans Chris Santos (bass/vocals) and Steven Kanika (guitar/keyboards/vocals), Dalton gives up infectious hooks, some hypnotic rhythms, and soaring vocals. Spencer's making good use of those 19 year-old muscles with his power drums, and the howling vocals of "Breathe In" only add to the excitement. Standout tracks include the lyrical "Life Afraid" and the mesmerizing "Take What You Want" with its surprising bridge. The impassioned vocals of "600 Feet" fit beautifully with the note-bending guitar work. One of my favorites is the trippy, percolating "Gabriel (Hold On)". Closer "Hold Me" brings it all home nicely, and leaves you wanting more of these inebriating Texans.
