First, Zomba/Verity Records sued Gospel artist Tonex for over a million for complaining. Then, Tonex fought back with his own federal lawsuit.
Zomba/Verity didn't like Tonex's public complaints over working conditions and business practices; that was the first lawsuit. Tonex's independent label, Nureau Ink, is fighting to release a best of Tonex, and there's the second. But Tonex says he isn't in it just for him self: "This is not just about me. I represent every artist that has been manipulated and used by the music industry and I seek vindication for all of the unsung heroes who are not working and not eating, because they are not being treated fairly by record companies." Well, he's right about one thing: this battle will set the stage for future artists and increase public awareness of some music industry problems. While Tonex is struggling financially to make ends meet, his music has made Zomba/Verity well in the millions in record sales. He is taking unprecedented steps to slay a gospel music giant, and it will take fortitude, but Tonex says he's ready with God and his fans by his side. For more info, check out his myspace.
