Beth Champion Mason’s sophomore album, “Postcards,” will make you think, and that’s a good thing. She’s no lightweight.
Her journey back to God was rough and tumble, but it wasn't for nothing. She learned much along the way, and is honest enough to share it, brilliant enough to share it well. The thing that stands out in this pop-flavored album is her amazing lyrics. Mason is the thinking man's worshipper. All of her songs flow from deep Scriptural truths, and she has written them in such a way as to inspire, both with their beauty and with their conviction. "Not Afraid" is just one of many examples. This declaration of faith includes these faith-building lyrics: Step into the darkness bravely/shining your faith like a flame/Fling handfuls of hope into caverns of despair/knowing there's power in His name. Powerful stuff, and it continues throughout. Deeply worshipful, whether she is pronouncing His greatness in "Holy" or confessing His wonders in the passionate "Hallowed Be Thy Name." Another standout track is the wise and introspective rocker "Save Me," which really brings home the reality of our desperate need. The title track is another winner, lushly written to recognize and celebrate His constant presence. "Postcards," produced by Joe Mazza, takes you before the Lord with great joy and wit, a real treat.
