Where Angels Sing: The Worship Album

If you like your worship music guitar-driven with a raw intensity, you'll enjoy "Where Angels Sing: The Worship Album," the 4th studio project from Broken Yoke.

“Where Angels Sing” is a bit of a departure from the harder rock of their previous albums, but those electric soundscapes and raspy vocals survived intact. Their worship venture offers two covers (a muscular take on Charlie Hall’s “Give Us Clean Hands” and an edgy, raucous rendition of Chris Tomlin’s “King of Glory” that I thoroughly enjoyed) and nine original tracks of hard-driving electric worship.

Founder and lead vocalist Jon Lepinski does the writing, and he is a master of hooky choruses, instantly apparent on opener “Rescue Me,” as well as the fiercely performed “Run to You.” There’s a nice mix of tempos and styles on “Where Angels Sing,” moving from the focused passion and slow burn of “You Are Holy” to the wildly electric rocker “Spirit Draws Me In.” I love the way the eloquent “You are Holy” closes, its passionate refrain “You’re my friend” leaving me with goosebumps.

Other standout tracks include the oh-so-brief title track, its lovely chorale opening over airy string arrangements, and “The Reason I Believe,” taking faith down to its bottom line. We believe because of Who He is, Lepinski’s gritty vocals coming right from the gut. A final mention: Dale Ann Burden’s vocals add a million bucks to the worshipful closer, “Far Away.”

It’s great to see a band move out of its comfort zone. Broken Yoke comes across as quite confident in a different genre that suits them very well. Visit www.brokenyoke.com for more on these electrifying indies.
