After over a decade of leading worship all over the world, Carl Cartee has a strong heart for the church. It shows up all over his Spring Hill debut, "Unfailing."
It's no surprise considering that Carl has been involved with church worship from the age of twelve when he began serving as pianist on his home church team. The eleven acoustic pop tracks of "Unfailing" are straight ahead worship songs, for the most part, often rooting deep into your soul with piercing lyrics. Cartee tends to write songs that beg to be sung on Sunday morning; they'd fit well in either corporate or personal worship settings. But the thing is, they all work. Opener "My Offering" is the first single, a bright pop worship song, thick with guitars and anthemic lyrics. It's followed by the very appealing "Chasing After You," relaying the story of David's chase after God's glory with a touch reminiscent of Steven Curtis Chapman's meaningful lyrics. More SCC in next track "How Far," Cartee's earnest vocals riding a bed of thundering guitars. The simplicity and passion of "Unfailing Love" makes it prime Sunday morning material, and the sparkling guitars only increase its charm. "Amazed" is a song that will move you spiritually if you're breathing. Its melodic changes and soaring vocals make it a real faith-booster, as is "More Than Just Words," calling us to live a faith that is real. Cartee really hits his stride in the pearly pop changes of "King of My Soul." His strength lies in the utter accessibility of his music, the necessary but under-appreciated sign of a great worship leader. I waited all through the album for a ballad, and I was rewarded handsomely for my patience by the shimmering "Heaven," a deeply worshipful acoustic track that brings Eric Clapton to mind. The tenderly arranged ballad contains lustrous strings that cannot fail to move you, wrapping this inspiring project up perfectly. "Unfailing" is Carl Cartee doing what he was created to do; we all should be so lucky.
