In this follow-up to his 2003 stunner “On the Road to Beautiful,” Charlie Hall’s CD, “Flying Into Daybreak,” soars with a renewed sense of confidence and purpose.
The fittingly-titled project is a joyous affirmation of Hall's journey, shared, as always, with great generosity of spirit. The twelve original songs, with the occasional assistance of ministry-partners Louie Giglio and Matt Redman, are exhilarating anthems of faith and, may I add, they rock. Percussionist Dustin Ragland offers exciting African additions (doumbek & tabla) that only lift the energy levels; believe me when I tell you you'll be spotting some daylight yourself. And the lyrics are as on target as the instrumentation: from the achingly worshipful "Your Glory Endures Forever" comes "mountains melting in Your flame/Creation pulsing out Your name." It doesn't hurt that the song throbs with the same vigor. Each song deserves to be included, but standouts include "All My Love," which pounds out sheer celebration, rejoicing in the wild wonders of our forgiveness. The best might be the uplifting "Bravery," as tune and lyrics weave a tight tapestry of urgency. Its staccato rhythms and sparkling instruments perfectly portray the excitement of our moment-to-moment connection with the God of all the universe, leaving us with the invigorating refrain "Doesn't my heart burn within me." Hall offers the CD to "those who want to change the world and for those who are trying to make it through the next few hours and for everyone in between," asking God to "move us out of our sleep and into a place of life, ready to give." Yes, indeed. What a heavenly wake-up call.
