Chris Mason, Songs One Through Six
Chris Mason's "Songs One Through Six" is an indie EP you can sink your teeth into, staying with you for days, disturbing your breakfast and haunting you into the night.

If you like your music moody, expressive and brilliant, you'll enjoy these six understated songs of depth. I kept thinking each song was my favorite..... until the next one. And this was after repeated listening. That's what I mean about haunting; each song is laden with moments of inscrutability that appear at will. Chris Mason is musically commanding and, I know no other way to say this, strongly masculine.

Maybe it's the southern vibe of the mando guitar of opener "Waiting," or the throbbing Rhodes that simmers below "Slow Me Down." But if you think I'm crazy listen closely to the standout track "Second Chance." Mason's rich graphic lyrics complement the robust pulse of this song, his moaning vocals drip with pathos, and you somehow feel all this in the back of your knees. I'm just saying.

The glorious opener "Waiting" powerfully expresses the ambivalence of love, the presence of producers Andrew Osenga and Cason Cooley weighing in impeccably on strings and keyboards. The disquieting ballad "Slow Me Down" got under my skin, and I mean that in the nicest way. I had to keep coming back to it, over and over, vexed by its hesitancy, its sorrow. This doesn't mean that my experience was not positive; it means that it goaded me in irresistible ways. While this may not how we generally enjoy music, I think good music, powerful and provocative music will stir you in ways both pleasurable and unsettling. This is the eloquent gift of Chris Mason, not to be disdained. It is a valuable mystery.

The project is closed bravely by Mason's starkly worshipful hymn, "Precious Lord, They Mercy Come." The magic continues with the moving lyric "for the king declares the war is won." Chris Mason, leaving you still in wonder on his way out the door.
