Fernando Ortega returns to his inspirational roots with "Shadow of Your Wings: Hymns and Sacred Songs," a stunner that drips with reverential recognition.
“Shadow of Your Wings: Hymns and Sacred Songs” is an enchanting mix of lush originals and classic hymns richly tweaked by Ortega’s creative arrangements. I confess to not being very familiar with Ortega, apparently a serious error on my part. But timing is everything and it seems I’ve discovered him at just the right moment, for “Shadow” is a study in loveliness, pure and simple. Written in response to the frenetic pace of our time, Ortega offers 14 contemplative tracks, several of them Scripture passages lovingly set to reverential simple music. Starting at the morning mass from the Book of Common Prayer, he makes his way through the positions of worship, creating and performing songs bearing a liturgical air. He has assembled a sterling team of guest artists who enrich the project greatly. The presence of violinist Andrea Zonn makes itself known throughout these thoughtful arrangements, and the contributions of Alison Krause, Vince Gill and the much-missed Susan Ashton are happy gifts as well. Opening with the classically-arranged “Grace and Peace,” Ortega uses gentle strings and sensitive clarinet to announce his intentions for an experience in sincere worship. Every measure of this elegant song is noteworthy and genuinely moving. The throbbing strings of “All Flesh Is Like the Grass” continue the ambiance of majesty. “Open My Lips,” a brief beauty, is an interlude of musical prayer. Some classic hymns bear a stately air (“All Creatures of our God and King”), others are softly subdued (the luscious “Great is Thy Faithfulness,” delicately lifted by Susan Ashton’s vocals). The quiet ballad, “Oh God, You Are My God,” is a deeply artistic expression of reverent worship, Ortega’s soft vocals pouring out a passion that breathes. I also loved his ethereal treatment of “Sing to Jesus,” Alison Krause’s background vocals trembling over the tightly humming strings. Fernando Ortega’s answer to the unforgiving pace of modern life, "The Shadow of Your Wings: Hymns and Sacred Songs" appears as a exquisite oasis. When it releases on October 24th, give yourself an afternoon or evening of uninterrupted time, a sacred meeting if you will, to receive its full benefits.
