Go Fish Interview, Snow
The guys of Go Fish have a unique and wonderful mission: to provide music for the whole family to enjoy together. Quite the concept, huh? Find out more in our interview.

Their music is equal to this indomitable task, as our Suite review of "Snow" tells. The three guys of Go Fish (Jamie Statema, Jason Folkmann, and Andy Selness) make it work; our recent chat with them explains a bit of the how and why.

The obvious question first: how did you get involved with children's music ministry?

Our approach to children's music is pretty unique. We don't make music just for kids. We make music for kids AND their parents. That's the key difference between us and groups like The Wiggles and Barney. We like to say that we make music for kids ages 0-100!

Secondly, we have an agenda and that is to tell people about Christ. There is all kinds of research to support the fact that most Christians make their decisions to serve Christ at an early age. That being said, if Christian music exists to tell others about God, then I believe we need to focus more on this age group. There are plenty of bands out there making music for jr. high and up, so we made the decision to go where we were needed.

How difficult is it to find a balance that both kids and adults can enjoy? What is it you aim for?

The key to this is making sure our music has integrity. By that I mean that we don't cut down on production budgets, songwriting, etc., just because it's a kids project. People don't give kids enough credit. They're smarter than you think. We don't talk down to them lyrically or dumb down our musical arrangements. We want to be better than any other children's artist out there by making great music for kids that won't drive their parents bonkers!!

What is the best way you know to help kids keep their Christmas focus on Christ and not Santa?

By talking about Christ with your kids a lot more than you talk about Santa!

How do you keep your own focus on God in the midst of ministry/business?

For me personally, it's by being in God's word every day and by making decisions based on eternal significance, not earthly value. We also make sure to never forget why we started Go Fish in the first place - to follow Christ's call to be 'fishers of men'. It's not about us being famous or selling a million records, it's about telling people to turn from their sin and receive the gift of forgiveness through Jesus Christ to ensure their eternal salvation. Nothing else matters.

Does your kid-orientation keep you from having a favorite coffee drink? Or does coffee add to the kid-energy? If so, what do you drink?

Once I have my venti triple latte from Starbucks I can entertain more kids than you can possibly imagine!
