Jesus tells us that our heart lies with the things we treasure. Greg Adkins makes it very clear where his heart is and what he treasures most on his latest CD, Chase the Western Sky. His great love for his family and for his God is stamped throughout the CD. Chase the Western Sky blends Adkins' charming voice with his skillfully crafted lyrics in an Americana, traditional musical style.
There is no doubt that Greg Adkins thinks the world of his family. If ever there was, Chase the Western Sky would put all doubt to rest. The opening song, “Old Radio” is a call to simpler times and enjoying those with his wife. He lays it out by saying, “I want a simple life/ I want a deeper well/ Nothing to show just stories I can tell/ I want an old radio/ Everything else can go/ And on summer nights we could dance together slow.”
“The End of You and Me” sounds like it could be a heart-wrenching breakup song, when in fact it is quite the opposite. Parents will smile at the story Adkins spins. His experience is one that many people will connect with. They will understand the closing of the song, “And this is better than I thought it would be/ The end of you and me.”
Many times, a writer compares his lady fair to something beautiful like a sunset or a flower. With the song “Old Shoes”, Adkins compares the love of his life to worn footwear. The thing is, somehow he gets away with it. It may be his smooth vocals or the B-3 he is playing that lets him slide. Or the fact that his wife is singing harmony vocals. “Please don't change anything there is nothing I would lose/ You fit me perfectly like a pair of old shoes” Not many people could pull of a line like that, but Adkins comes out smelling like roses.
One thing that Greg Adkins has is a very realistic view of himself and of God. In “My Own Worst Enemy” Adkins talks about his problems with pride. With “Put Back Together” we hear about the wonderful God that picks up our pieces and makes something beautiful of them. The chorus is full of hope and promise, “And I'm waiting for the day/ After all of this breaking is through/ When I won't be put back together/ I'll be made new.”
“Jesus Won’t Give Up On Me” tells one of the most comforting truths. Jesus is there for us, waiting for us to come running no matter how bad we screw up. Adkins relays God’s promise by saying, “And when my numbered days are done/ And when His face at last I see/ I will be welcomed as a son/ My Jesus won’t give up on me.”
With the help of talented artists like Andrew Osenga, Dave Potts, River Guerguerian, plus many more and with Chris Rosser leading production, Greg Adkins has delivered a fine piece of art with Chase the Westeren Sky. Adkins’ songwriting is honest and from the heart making it accessible to everyone. Chase the Western Sky is a joy and a blessing. It is a gift.
