“Hip Hope Hits 2006” is the second entry in a new yearly compilation of the best in hip-hop. Doncha dig the title?
Hip-hop is currently the culture's hottest music, and these soldiers of positivity and yes, hope, are right on time with these viable alternatives to the racist, misogynist, negative messages pouring from the mainstream. This 2-disc project offers most of the major players from the Christian hip-hop scene right now, and many, if not most, of these eighteen tracks are right on the mark. There's some nice variation within the genre represented, the reggae-flavored offerings of DJ Maj and the superb Liquid, and Verbs, the latter's song being one of three exclusive Hip-Hope tracks. I'm glad to hear some of the sistas included (Molly Jensen with Ahmad Jones and Pigeon John, and Catt with Bonefied. Standout tracks include LA Symphony's "Dance Like," the very strong offering from Manafest, "Let it Go," and the Procussions' "What's Your Name." KJ-52"s tender "I Can Call" is powerful for its vulnerable honesty, and Catt's "Fear No Evil" is the perfect closer. My favorite track is "Pushing Through" from Shonlock, funky guitar licks reeking of Curtis Mayfield. All in all, a good compilation, representing well. Sound good? Buy it here.
