Hughes: Do It All Again, Christian rock
Colorado rockers Hughes do a bit of alchemy with their debut CD, "Do It All Again," spinning the darkness of their pasts into hard rock rays of light.

As a band, Hughes only came together in 2006, but these five players have between them quite the legacy of hard-won chops. Lead vocalist/guitarist Adam Hughes formerly fronted Second Stone, a Colorado band regionally successful for ten years. His partnership with veteran guitarist David Ashley is several years old now, and by 2006 career guitarist Ken Goldberg was on board, as well as bassist Frank Romero with 20 years of experience and long-time friend, drummer Al Boyce. Together the quintet has compiled 17, count ‘em, seventeen tracks, over an hour of howling alt rock, thick with splashy sound.

Often compared to Creed, Hughes is more reminiscent of Third Day with an edge, due to Adam Hughes’ Mac Powell-like raspy vocals. Opener “Can You Hear Me” features his gut-wrenching singing over chunky electric guitar riffs. Anchored by Romero’s thick bass, “Oxygen” is notable for its rolling chord changes, while the rhythm section creates a sense of foreboding for Hughes’ intense vocals. Thundering guitars and fat drums powerfully express the fervent adoration of “Thorn,” and the shimmering guitars of “Time to Let Go” provide lustrous support for the track’s lyrical passion, very Third Day. I also enjoyed the mix of solid rock beats and soaring melody line of “Feel.”

Hughes is currently a semi-finalist in the 2007 Emergenza Festival and was recently selected as a finalist in The Unveiling, a Christian music talent contest, hosted by OnSeeker.com. I hear these indie rockers put on a live show as intense as their hard rocking studio sound; find out more at the Hughes website.
