"Come Undone," the full-length debut from Jackson Waters, won't hit the street until March 6. But their "Center of Attraction" EP whet our appetite mightily.
Jackson Waters' "Center of Attraction" (Read Suite review here) only made us want to know more about the modern rockers, and drummer Ryan Hawk was the man with the answers. Suite: Things seem to be breaking open for your band quickly, with the new album, video, the “One Tree Hill” show. Is this surprising to you , or have you had a sense that God had big things planned for the band? Ryan: "Quickly" is a word that has taken 4 years of hard work and dedication. People always talk about "overnight success," but it really has been a long process of working hard and making ends meet. We have known from the beginning that God has had his hand in everything we do and all of the opportunities we are given. We feel that we have a message of hope in our music and we come at life with a relational, real, experience approach. This ability to present Christian love through our songs and our relationships with the people we meet along the way have created the buzz and opportunities for us. I think people want to hear good music and a positive message and that's what we try to do. When art is critiqued, people want originality and quality regardless of the medium and regardless of the message. We hope that with "Come Undone," the album, the video, and the success keeps coming because we do this for a higher purpose and his hand is in everything we do as we make the best music with the best message that we can. Suite: What did you enjoy most about the NY video shoot? Least? Ryan: The experience of the video was amazing. It was our first video so it meant a lot to us. The colors that time of year were so beautiful. The ability to go to NY for the first time was quite an experience. The crew we worked with was wonderful, and we created relationships with them and they became fans of our music. The cold was my least favorite part. Playing the same song for 12 hours starting at 7 in the morning was somewhat boring, but the end result will be worth it. Suite: What is the best spiritual advice you’ve been given as you head into full-fledged success? Ryan: Keep our purpose. We do this for something higher and more powerful than we could ever be. Our pride must be always kept in line to be shining towards God's glory. We are just instruments in the orchestra. Communication with each other and maintaining a brotherhood and a spiritual accountability as it gets tougher to be involved in a church while on the road. Suite: As you put together this new album, what do you have in mind to communicate? Ryan: Hope. Peace. Reality. Grace. Strong words that have become emotions and experiences in our lives. We aren't perfect and we will never be, but we have been given grace and have overcome many things. We want the gospel to be inviting rather than incriminating or judgemental. We have been in your shoes and struggled with the same things. Our songs say that life is real and god's grace endures. Suite: On a lighter note….. favorite coffee drink? Ryan: French roast. black with a pink slip.(sweet and low) For more information on Jackson Waters, visit their website. And keep your eyes peeled for Suite's upcoming review of "Come Undone"..... even though that sounds pretty painful.
