Jill Phillips’ “Nobody’s Got It All Together” is laced with honesty, gentle humility, and above all, worship. For isn’t true worship often simply thankful surrender?

When the bottom fell out of the Christian singer-songwriter market several years ago, many talented artists were left hanging, Jill Phillips among them. I'm sure she had her bad moments, but ultimately, she threw her hands up- in worship. If you can't beat 'em, just go out and do great music anyway. And that she has on this fourth project.

Jill and her husband/artist/producer Andy Gullahorn joined forces with a dozen other like-minded artists, Derek Webb, Sandra McCracken, and Andrew Peterson among them, to form the Square Peg Alliance, a group created to promote and support artists who don't fit the Christian radio mold. Viva la difference! I for one am thankful for their perseverance and creativity, for I expect outstanding music and experience to flow from this exciting new source.

Jill's CD contains much of this process. It is rich with truth, luscious strings, and great intelligence. Her lilting vocals gently lead the listener into her experience of surrender and faith. "By a Thread" unflinchingly expresses doubt, even while asking God to move faith "down to my heart from my head." The incisive "Square Peg" hints at the sad reality of today's Christian music biz, but isn't its cry for Christ's sanctuary fitting for us all at times? I don't know about you, but I often fruitlessly wrestle with the world's definition of success. "Square Peg" will come in handy to me.

Several of these songs ministered to my spirit in this way. Gullahorn's powerful "Never Let Me Down" moved me mightily. This paean to God's steadfast love gently but insistently pounds out its repeating refrain of truth until it hits home. I also especially enjoyed the upbeat "Moving On," a rollicking celebration of grace.

Do I think Jill Phillips' fabulous new album will sell like hotcakes? Unfortunately, no. Do I believe she has offered up an accomplished and significant work of musical worship? Oh yeah, baby. Do yourself a favor: ignore the trends. There is some great music happening outside the box. Jill Phillips represents these artists, and her God, well.
