If you’ve read my review of Jill Phillips’ latest, the wonderful "Nobody’s Got It All Together," you already know she is a sister with something to say.
Here are a few of Jill's thought on the life of music from a recent interview. (And don't miss my review of her album, a stunner.) What three words best describe how you feel today?Wow, honestly or sounding good? I am debating it! We actually just moved so I am pretty tired, overwhelmed, and in work mode! What is the most encouraging thing you have experienced as an indie artist?I think being indie sometimes helps rally the troops. People want to help you and they want to get the word out about your CD. The community aspect is really wonderful. Like myself, you seem to have a special passion for community. Why is it, do you think, that this is so precious to you?I think God created us to live in community- even He is Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Though he needs nothing even He is in community and I think that tells us something about why we long to know people and to be known. I think my life is richer when I have people around me to share it with. We learn so much from each other. I know your musical journey has taken through many ups and downs, and it seems to have brought you into a new understanding of "success." What is your favorite aspect of your current "success"?I think the ups and downs have given me a spirit of thankfulness. I never take for granted the fact that I have shows, can put out a record, that people still choose to buy them. All of this is just so amazing to me. That is truly success, to be doing something I feel called to do and to love it. Also like myself, it seems you truly enjoy your liberty, your indie freedom to be yourself. What do you think is your best usage of your freedom right now?I think it is great to be able to do the records you want to do, sell them how you want to sell them, be involved in every detail down to the artwork. If it goes badly at least it is your fault! I think there is a freedom in that. "Nobody's Got It All Together" has a lot to say about grace and honesty, I love it! What is hardest for you to be honest about in your own walk?It isn't one thing specifically, just a general feeling that I think we all struggle with to avoid being honest about our weaknesses or struggles at any given time. The myth is always that people won't like you as much, but it really is a lie. I am always drawn to people who are honest about their lives and joys and struggles. As Frederick Buechner says, if we can tell our stories honestly then we can tell our spiritual story honestly. If we are pretending to have it all together we can't very well talk about the need for a Redeemer. What is one song you wish you had written? Oh, most anything by David Wilcox or Rich Mullins. I think they are just about the best song craftsmen I have ever heard. Jill Phillips' music is well worth checking out, if you haven't yet. Or visit her at her website. You'll see what I mean!
