Jilleen is one busy lady, between releasing her third indie CD, “The Hymns Experience,” her hectic speaking ministry and heading up the Christian Divas network.
But somehow she found time to make this project of modern hymn arrangements. I think many will be glad she did.
It takes a certain level of skills to bring off a hymns project successfully, what with the familiarity trap and the successes that precede you. But Jilleen's CD is very contemporary, and she brings a nice sense of diversity to these hugely recognizable public domain gems, not an easy task. Which is to say, she keeps it fresh.
Opening beautifully with the very upbeat presentation of "This is My Father's World," Jilleen sets a sprightly tone from the outset. The lively background vocals add to the optimistic feel; her studio team serves her well throughout. The next standout track, "Immortal, Invisible," comes from 1 Timothy 1:17, that glorious passage of the King, and Jilleen's heartfelt expression honors it beautifully. Her soprano rings as clear as a bell, reminiscent of Twila Paris, in her sparkling take on "Take My Life and Let It Be." I especially enjoyed her acoustic interpretation of "Jesus Loves Me." She brings an earthy fun feel to it which not just anyone could pull off. "Softly and Tenderly" is quietly earnest and string-rich closer "May the Peace of the Lord" tops off the album perfectly, with a tenderness that feels almost curative.
Like I said, I don't know how Jilleen does it. I'm just glad she does.
