Keith L. Cooper: Sacred DanceReview
The classically-trained guitarist Keith L. Cooper cuts loose with "Sacred Dance," a rich, diverse mix of styles and centuries. Hugely satisfying.
“Sacred Dance” is, as Cooper himself says, “contemporary in nature, classical in thought.” Simply put, this instrumental album will enchant you with the unexpected. His original songs move from classically influenced to sizzling Spanish to bouncy blues, featuring his outstanding guitar work throughout. Cooper also arranged the whole album, capturing artistically in strings his rich perceptions of heaven. The title track was the first to really grab my attention. Its lush strings and rhythms move in and out of a Spanish flair, but the whole song just burns with passion. Jan Stolpe’s programming touches add depth to these tracks, featured tenderly on the classic “Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus.” Cooper’s bouncy take on “The Old Rugged Cross” will surprise you with its blues movements, and Kevin Grantt’s bass is especially able. “Wind Chase” is a delicious rhythmic dance, thick with lively sound. I don’t know when I’ve seen a song more aptly titled than “Cloud Burst;” its movements exemplify a quick summer storm, the sizzling strings hinting of explosiveness over rich percussion. “G Minor Guitar Fantasy” is stirring and majestic, and the warmth and energy of “Keeper of the Flame” closes out this sparkling project perfectly, leaving you, as I said initially, hugely satisfied. Much thanks to Keith L. Cooper for the glorious string interpretations of “Sacred Dance.”
