When reviewing the "Son of the Most High" compilation, from Songs From the Voice, Suite was glad to spot Kendall Payne among the tracks. And on one of the standouts, too.
This talented singer/songwriter has been missing too long from the Christian music scene. So we were happy she agreed to bring us up to date on all things Kendall.
Suite: Kendall, I love the honesty of your Bio on your website. What would you say is the biggest lesson you’ve brought away from your years in the music industry?
Kendall: I think one of the most profound principles or lessons I’ve learned is this: the Music Business is filled with the highest highs and the lowest lows. This can leave an artist either insanely prideful or devastatingly depressed. I suppose I’ve been in both places at various times in my life. But Scripture says, “Humble thyself in the sight of the Lord.” When I am on my highest high, I am advised and instructed to humble myself. And Scripture also says that God is the “Lifter of our head.” So when I am in the lowest of lows, God comes and gives hope to the faintest of hearts. This “Balance” in life is probably the greatest lesson I’ve had to learn.
Suite: I know part of your current ministry involves speaking engagements. What is your favorite topic to address?
Kendall: Public speaking is a new avenue of communication for me. I haven’t developed a favorite topic yet, but in everyday conversation I enjoy discussing a full range of social issues. My husband is in his 4th year of Medical School so we have a lot of “Heath Care” related conversation, mixed with art, politics and God! Also, “Interpersonal Relationships” is always a fun one! Learning about yourself through the conflict and context of another human being provides stimulation material for hours and hours!
Suite: What would you say is the element of your ministry and your music that fans connect with the most?
Kendall: Well, since I’ve been dropped by two labels, and have struggled and suffered to keep my head above water in the business for the last decade… I’m not sure I know the answer to this question! But what I’d like to believe is the main connection is my honesty.
Suite: What inspires you?
Kendall: Everything.
Suite: I also enjoyed reading about your Wall of Quotations. Favorite quote from your Quote Wall?
Kendall: When I moved, I had to paint over my quote wall! So sad! But I never had a favorite, I loved them all. The most re-occurring author was Rainer Maria Rilke. Who wrote one of the most influential pieces of literature I’ve read in my life. He had a correspondence with a young man who ended up publishing the writings and it’s called “Letters to a Young Poet.” It’s a MUST!
Suite would have to agree with Kendall's self-assessment: Her honesty is her great gift, to us and to herself. Pick up "Grown," Kendall Payne's sophomore CD at CD Baby. Or check out her website for more info.
