Kendall Triplett, Gospel Music
A good day in a reviewer's life? When you open an inauspicious package of an unknown artist and suddenly musical bliss is erupting from your speakers. Kendall Triplett.

Yup, Kendall Triplett happened this morning and suddenly everything smells sweeter. His wide-ranging soulful pipes took me by surprise and if I ruled the world, this cat would be signed. Quickly.

The funny part is that Kendall himself was unsure about pursuing a musical career. It was only after reading a book called “Think Big” that he decided to go after his dream. That path led to receiving the “Unsung Singers” promotional award from Kirk Franklin’s Fo Yo Soul Productions and a few TBN performances before he eventually gained the confidence to write the six songs on his self-titled EP.

The EP covers jazz, soul, and gospel flavors and each of them proficiently, from the nicely-nuanced jazz strains of opener “Victory,” to the bouncy R&B encourager “Keep Your Eyes on Me,” to the slow-burning gospel ballad “Just Believe.” His warm vocals never waver, meeting each style segue effortlessly, like an old friend. “Just Believe” shows just how deep those vocal skills go, as he resists the temptation to belt it out and chooses rather to lay back and imbue the track with power through his expressive interpretation. Wise choice. But it’s “My Everything” that really steals the show, offered twice, first in an electric radio version and again as the EP’s acoustic closer. Both renditions are beautifully arranged and showcase Triplett’s warmest of tones, the radio cut including some nice moments of free-flow worship on the way out. Lyrically, Triplett is just as on track, especially on the fervent song of repentance, “Where Do I Go From Here.” The packaging and production values aren’t the strongest, but it just makes you wonder what the guy could do with the right equipment.

I’m telling ya, if I was queen, Triplett would be signed and chocolate bars would grow on trees. Ah, a girl can dream, right? Visit his website for your own dream come true.
