EMI Gospel newcomer Kevin Vasser brings Chi-town church to his live solo debut “So Glad,” streeting Sept. 26, as well as a real heart for ministry.
Formerly with the Chicago-based gospel group Youth Edition, Vasser is ready to reach out on his own now. "So Glad" is as natural as it gets, recorded live in his home church, Fellowship Baptist Church in Chicago, where he serves as the Director of Worship & Arts. His heart for ministry comes across strong on these ten tracks, moving from a straight-up plea for guidance on "Show Us the Way," to the encouraging "Best Way," coaxing his backup team along with the smoothest of vocals, to the hard-driving keyboard-driven "Highest Praise." Opener "One Touch" is thick with enthusiasm, not to mention a heavy dose of funk. The title track and lead single "So Glad" rings with authenticity, instantly relatable to all of us who have needed, and received, a second chance.
Vasser shares a bit of his testimony on the bluesy driving standout track, "Pray for Me," at the same time highlighting his smooth vocal powers. This second half of the album brings things down to a more earthy level, showing up nicely on the smoking guitar solo on "Miracles." But he really does the heavy lifting on "This Little Light," as does the powerful backup choir and his tight rhythm section. "So Glad" closes movingly with the deeply worshipful and melodic "Your Name," leaving you well satisfied by Kevin Vasser's debut offering. Kevin, you can bring Chicago church around here anytime, brother.
