When Suite chatted with Kevin Vasser recently about his debut album, "So Glad," we found him to be a man who gets right to the point.
Kevin Vasser pours his heart out lavishly on "So Glad," recorded live at his home church in Chicago, and he was happy to give us the background on his journey to this place of ministry. Suite: Kevin, you say your Dad had a great deal to do with your focus while you were with your first band, Youth Edition, that he taught you from the get-go to keep it about the Lord. How hard is that to do? Kevin: In the beginning it was hard because I was really depending on my father's relationship with Christ, but as I've gotten older I developed my own relationship with Him. Suite: I know a lot of the greats served you as mentor and teacher along the way. Who gave you the best advice, and what was it? Kevin: Rance Allen. He told me once to always give the people Jesus! No matter what style of music just make sure Christ is represented. Suite: You still serve in your home church, Fellowship Baptist Church in Chicago, IL, as the Director of Worship & Arts. What exactly does that position entail? What are your creative duties? Kevin: I oversee three departments in my church which are the Music Department, Drama Guild, Dance Ministry. My creative duties include selecting, teaching and directing the choirs and praise team; coordinating rehearsals and engagements; planning workshops; and supervising presidents. Suite: You wrote a number of the tracks on “So Glad.” Do you consider yourself more of a singer or a songwriter? Kevin: I am singer first and songwriter second. Suite: What one central message would you like listeners to take away from “So Glad”? Kevin: There are still gospel singers that believe in putting out anointed music.
