Making of an Indie Artist, Pt. 2

More With Lindsey Kane

Oct 13, 2006 Kevan Breitinger

Lindsey Kane has been gracious to share with us the details of her process as a Christian indie artist, from her initial calling, up to her actual recent recording.

Lindsey continues her discussion of her process of "saying yes" to the Lord as He called her to pursue singing for Him.

Lindsey, what were the most encouraging signs you found during that process?

The most encouraging signs that I witnessed throughout the process of stepping into full-time ministry would probably have to be the testimonies of people who were being changed by the songs that God has given me. There is nothing like hearing someone cry to you about how God has changed their lives through a song they listened to. The people who God put in my path to minister to were so encouraging.

And also, I would have to say that the continued open doors were also very encouraging. Everywhere I went, the Lord was opening up huge doors for me and ministry. He was giving me one green light after another. Providing gigs and places to minister and finances to record a CD and He gave me the grace to pursue my music career and finish college all at the same time!

What is the best way to resist any discouragement you might experience along the way?

It is easy to get discouraged in what I do. It is easy to believe the numerous lies that satan throws at me. But when I find myself down and discouraged, I go to the Word and I go to my past experiences with the faithfulness of God. If I am feeling dry, I read the Word to get filled back up. I pour His truth into my life and He sustains me and reminds me that I’m doing exactly what He’s called me to do. I sit with Him and He tenderly speaks to me and reminds me of my calling and rekindles my passion.

Thinking about past experiences also helps me resist discouragement. I can always remember how the Lord came through in the past and I am encouraged. I’ve found that discouragement is always lurking around the next corner, but if I’m ready to fight it, I can continue. I can go to the Lord with my disappointments and He can remind me of who He is and who He has created me to be.

What words of wisdom might you have for young people who may be hearing that same call right now in their own lives?

Words of wisdom… hmm… I don’t claim to be wise, but I do know from experience how special it is to hear that call in your life. I would encourage anyone who may be feeling called into full-time ministry in some capacity to sit with the Lord. There is something about getting alone with God in the stillness and in solitude to make sure that it is His voice you are hearing. In my case, I had no doubt, and I’m so thankful for that because I second guess what I hear all the time. It is so important to be still with Him and pour over His Word to see if you are truly called.

I would say something that I always thought was so cliché: you will know. Its true… if you are called into full-time ministry, you will know. God will make it apparent to you. His Word says that if you turn to your right or to your left you will hear a voice behind you saying, “This is the way, walk in it.” And He will. He is faithful.

And then, my advice would be to surrender. Once you are sure that you are called, just surrender. Don’t stress out about it or be anxious about how it’s going to happen. Just be you and surrender to the call the Lord has placed on your life. For so long, I tried to make everything happen just the way I wanted it to. But when I truly surrendered everything to Him, He took over and He gets the glory! Don’t rush into anything too quickly. Make sure that it is God who is calling you and then spend time with Him. As you get to know Him more, He will prepare you for what He created you for. It’s all about Him. Never lose sight of that, no matter what. It’s more than a Christian bumper sticker. It’s the truth: it’s all about Him.
