Marcus Cole's new "Write My Song" is musically strong, but as our recent chat with the PureSprings Gospel artist shows, he enjoys teaching as much as making music.
"Write My Song" is strictly solid artistry and showmanship (See Suite review here), but our interview with this talented gospel singer shows the depths of his big heart for God. I love CeCe Winans' quote about nothing being "more powerful than a man worshipping God," and I believe it to be true. Why do you think we find such power in that image? The image of a man (which represents the authority figure or covering of a family) worshipping God is crazy powerful because this is the image that God first saw of man. Before the "fall" man worshipped God in the spirit 24/7. After the fall, God saw nothing but Adam's flesh. Which image would you rather see? Spirit or Flesh? In the lyrics of "Write My Song" (which I loved!) you mention some hot topics: the purity of marriage, our constant failings in the area of faithfulness...I appreciate your honesty and wonder how comfortable you find your audiences to be with it. The time for psuedo-perfect images are over, I'd much rather be honest about myself and give people perspective, than to make myself out to be a flawless image of celebrity. You cover several different music styles on the project: old school R&B, hip-hop, classic strings...What is your personal favorite genre? That's way too hard to answer, but I'll try. Umm........it has to be.....anything with great melodies and lyrical content......Sorry! I found a strong theme of encouragement running through the songs of "Write My Song." Would you say that is your main message? If so, why?Well, most writers pen from their experiences or passions, and enlightenment (to me) is the best form of encouragement. I could tell you that it's going to get better but if I don't show you Godly promises that support it "getting better" then your hope is deferred, and you'll only have brief mountain top experiences and longer valley visits.
