The Christian music scene is delighted to welcome back Michelle Tumes, returning with a new self-titled album on November 14th.
Remembering the strong set of pipes Micelle commanded, Suite was thrilled to have the chance to hear more about her plans.
Suite: Michelle, it sounds as if you’ve really come through a very different kind of season. How hard was it to walk away from the security of Sparrow Records?
Michelle: It was very difficult to walk away from the security of Sparrow, because they were my first and only record company and they had everything covered from choosing songs to radio to actually getting the albums to listeners. Although it is a lot of work to take everything on, it is a test of endurance!
Suite: It seems to have been a choice that worked out well for you creatively. Do you find a season of quiet invigorates you, primes the well, so to speak?
Michelle: Definitely, I feel that the move to California, writing more classical music for other artists and a change of scenery really helped clear my head. Also, not having the security of the wonderful Christian music community really tested my faith and I feel, made it stronger.
Suite: I’m looking forward to hearing the classical orchestration of the new album. I understand you conducted the orchestra at times. Was this a new experience for you? What challenged you most?
Michelle: Yes, this was a very daunting experience. The language barrier really challenged me the most, even though we had an interpreter. I was a bit insecure and thought that the jokes between the musicians in Czech were directed towards me! The interpreter assured me this was not true!
Suite: What do you write first: music or lyrics?
Michelle: I get inspired by a concept and a title or theme comes to mind almost simultaneously with the music. Also, sometimes I do write a lyrical concept first. It all depends on the situation.
Suite: Did you have a particular message in mind with this new project?
Michelle: I would love the listener to be aware that the God who is so powerful, through His Son wants to meet us at even in our emotions and inspire us to a closer relationship with Him. I personally am brought closer to God when He embraces me at this level. This is why I use stories sometimes; it is perhaps from another perspective and not the norm. When the mind is caught off guard, sometimes God can meet us on a deeper level. I understand that my music is quite different and it is a step of faith for me to extend it to others, because one of my weaknesses is worrying what people will think. However, God is stronger than all of that!
Suite: Your touring plans are quite ambitious! With this in mind, I have to ask this burning question: your favorite coffee drink?
Michelle: I LOVE coffee. Thanks for asking! It depends on the time and area. For instance, to me Oregon is a great place to get coffee, so there, it is always a double or triple latte. At home, black strong Italian roast and sometimes with cream.
