Indie artist Mindy Boyd's "Coming Home" will grab you by the throat with its luminosity and unique instrumentation. Folkie, fresh, and fabulous, in a nutshell.
Pennsylvania artist Mindy Boyd presents her captivating original songs with ease and confidence, maybe because she’s been singing and writing since the age of 6. The prodigy fell easily into her singing career after college as a duo with Tina Lapp, but has been solo for the past few years, and seems thoroughly comfortable on her own. Her eclectic writing style and some brave vocal choices reveal a quiet confidence, along the lines of Tara Leigh Cobble. Actually, the two indie artists have a very similar sensibility. “Coming Home” opens strong, with the esoteric, dreamy “About a Girl,” a uniquely expressive track with a vibrant ‘60s vibe, edgy and bravely exploratory. A simmering organ and sparkling strings add to the dreamy feel of this standout track. The bouncy “95” switches things up with its acoustic percolating rhythms and splashy drums, before the nicely nuanced “Lonely Days,” a quiet acoustic testimony to God’s perfect love, slows things down with a gentle 12-string guitar. The buzzy, atmospheric “Free” offers up a soaring melody line and some interesting techno vibes, none of which detract from the beauty of the appealing lyrics. The stark production of worship track “Every Reason” similarly lets Boyd’s vocal purity pierce through the strings like the beam of a rapidly approaching freight train. She has given her album every opportunity to shine in these pristine and intelligent arrangements. The soulful “Broken Things,” a song of relinquishment penned by Julie Miller, is performed flawlessly, and former partner Tina Lapp’s “Ocean” is a masterpiece of shimmering guitars and beautifully layered vocals. There is much to love on Mindy Boyd’s “Coming Home,” released independently in October 2006. Find out more about this spectacular indie artist on her website.
