The Newsboys GO International

Newsboys Interview, GO album
Newsboys drummer Duncan Phillips had me on the edge of my seat with his tales of their international adventures. How does a Christian band minister in a Muslim country?

The first part of my conversation with Duncan only whetted my appetite for more Newsboys adventures.

"Going to Morocco was amazing on a different level." The Newsboys were invited by the King of Morocco to participate in the Friendship Festival between the Moroccans and the West. "We played in front of 15,000 Muslims," Duncan shares. "In our culture Christianity is accepted, but when you go somewhere where it's not and start singing about Christ, it cuts like a knife. It was incredibly moving but also a spiritual experience like I've never seen before. You can actually see the freedom start to come into the faces in the audience; they've never heard anything like this. By the end of the show they looked like completely different people. But it wasn't us, it was all a work of the Spirit. God is doing amazing things, and He will do more amazing things far beyond what we think can happen." The excitement in Duncan's voice is stirring; it's obvious that he himself was touched in Morocco.

I asked him about the recent addition to the Newsboys, the talented Paul Colman. And the excitement persists. "He's a guy we've known for a lot of years, a guy that we respect as a man and as a musician. So when we had an opening, and Peter suggested calling him, we thought he'd never come with us, because he has so much of his own thing going on. But he did accept, and he's really pulling a freshness into the band. He's so into it! He's not doing it part-time, with his own thing on the side. He's 110% into being a Newsboy, and he's a real asset. The band is better for it."

But you'll have a chance to see for yourself. The Newsboys new album, "GO," releasing on October 31, was motivated by these international experiences, and echoes the call of the Great Commission. Make sure to check back to Suite, we hope to review it soon.
