Red Umbrella Interview, Christian rock
The poetic alt-rock of Red Umbrella's "Wishing for Boardwalk" is like nothing else you're hearing... anywhere.

So Suite was thrilled to have the chance to ask a few questions of these talented innovators.

Suite: Guys, we loved your combo of classic rock references and inventive writing. How difficult is it when writing to pay homage to those who’ve gone before and still keep things fresh? What is it that you do to avoid that so successfully?

Jeremy: We are glad you like it! I think the thing we shoot for when writing is to create songs that come from where we are spiritually and mentally rather than leaning on our favorite bands for direction. In the end it seems our influences come through without us consciously trying.

Suite: Jeremy, your sound is so unique. When did you first know you wanted to sing professionally?

Jeremy: Thanks! Sing professionally? I don’t think I have ever considered it like that. I just enjoy singing, and things came into place to make it happen. The band at one point lost a lead singer, and I just started filling in to keep things rolling. So far the guys decided not to replace me. Thanks guys.

Suite: What is your favorite venue?

Jason: Our favorite venue has to be Club 3° in Minneapolis, MN. They brought us in when not many people in Minnesota knew who we were and treated us like true professionals. Everything from massages to catered beef stroganoff to the best sound and lights; we had a great time.

Suite: What kind of crowd do you enjoy most?

Jason: Big ones? I think the crowd that responds the best to us live is the college crowd.

Suite: What song do you most enjoy playing live?

Jason: “Straitjacket.” We created this song (like many others) by jamming it out live in the studio and tracked most of it that way. It was a great song to create, and it’s still a fun song to play live. It has lots of energy, and we like ending our set with it!

Suite: What’s the best thing about life on the road?

Jason: We’ve seen a lot of beautiful country. Some people don’t get to travel much, and we do it for a living. Being able to travel and play music for a living is amazing.
