If there was a need to identify the sound of The Choir, and CD “O How the Mighty Have Fallen,” Coldplay would come to mind.
However, after twenty-five innovative and influential years of playing together, there is no such need. Even with this five year break since the last album, the legendary band brings "O How the Mighty Have Fallen," as fresh and timely as ever, commenting on, among other things, depression, divorce, and the rhythms of marriage. Steve Hindelong, Derry Daugherty, saxman Dan Michaels, bassist Tim Chandler, and the finally official guitarist Marc Byrd offer up this low-key atmospheric record with the usual confidence and cheer. From Daugherty: "The bottom line is that we are still very thankful for God's really great gift to us. More so than any of our other records, I think this one really means that to me." "Mighty" retains their usual blend of spacey soundscapes, shimmering guitars and meaty, intense lyrics. The title track leads off in classic Choir fashion, a bone-chilling whistle blending into a mesmerizing wall of sound, brilliant lyrics pinning you to the wall. Juxtaposed nicely against the tightly throbbing "Nobody Gets a Smooth Ride," the Choir sets up a burning groove that never quits. Through the customary haze of feedback comes the stunningly honest "Terrible Mystery," a poignant and true tale of divorce. "How I Wish I Knew" displays the same sacrificial integrity, holding back nothing as it peers into the dark depths of depression. The Choir cuts loose once more on the up-tempo standout "Fine, Fun Time," with a joyous 80's feel. And yet again, a good time was had by all.
