sarah kelly interview, where the past meets today
Sarah Kelly's hard rockin' "Where the Past Meets Today" releases today, so our interview with this talented sista is right on time. Thanks, Sarah, for your gutsy honesty.

Sarah, your music swells with a feeling of liberty and empowerment. What word of counsel do you have for those who haven't taken that first step toward liberty yet? What word of encouragement could you offer toward that first step?

I would say...life is too short. We only get one of these, and as much time as we want to waste on insecurity is up to us in the end. We cannot approach these things softly in our lives, because they do not approach us softly. When deciding to battle these things for good, one must prepare for a bit of a fight.

The key is honesty. Honesty with oneself brings positive, needed change, and change brings freedom and ultimately peace. But it all begins with raw uncut honesty. And for people-pleasers, this is a hard one.

It sounds like your early church experiences encouraged you to live as a "pleaser." What realization finally brought you to the place of being willing to be real? Or was it more just a generous gift from the Spirit, an undeserved, unexpected pure gift out of nowhere?

I think I finally broke. I could not live up to what I felt others expected of me anymore, and what I expected of myself. When I entered this way of living, it wasn't like I was trying to be dishonest. I just wanted to serve God my best. But there was a point about 7 years ago when I would "lie" to make another person in ministry appear better. This was a direct decision to win the approval of my church leaders, to be "worth my weight in gold" to them, more than even to God. This is when it became dangerous, a trap that would only take time to set off. No one asked me to lie or make them look better. It was a natural thing for a people-pleaser to do. It was a trap I set for myself, and take full responsibility for.

I think Christian radio could have given more support for "Take Me Away." And your fabulous new album, "Where the Past Meets Today," (See Suite review here) rocks even harder, so it too may find itself unappreciated by radio. But I get the feeling you're fine with that. Am I right in that observation? Could you share a bit about your expectations for the new album?

Well, you are surely right about that. Pure honest music, I believe, must be born from a soul's cry, and this is what mine sounds like right now. And I believe it is so pleasing to God, because it is honest. And I've always said that I would rather be the artist that all the radio people have in their cars that they wish they could play, than most of what is played today (laughing).

I went for the best songs, and the best instrumentation, and the best production. And it's all oozing with an inescapable naked heart.....so let that take me where it will.

Although it does appear that radio will be shy on this album. TV and movies are another story. I know of 3 placements already, and it's early.

OK, OK, I know those are some "heavy" questions. I'll lighten up. What is your favorite type of venue and why?

My favorite venue is a theatre, intimate with candle light, in an acoustic setting. This probably surprises you since I'm a rocker, but I totally love the softer side of this album the best, yum!

I saw a close-up of your new tattoo. (Very cool, by the way!) What is the significance of the one-winged heart?

The new tattoo is a one winged heart on my foot (so cute with heels!!)It has 2 meanings: one is from Royal Order Jewelry. They designed a one wing necklace and presented to me saying "You are ALMOST an angel." And I must admit, I am still looking for the other wing. (HMMMMMMM)
