Scott Krippayne's "Christmas" EP is a warm mix of classic carols and originals, with a big focus on the piano, an axe that comes off like an extension of Scott himself.
Scott Krippayne is an artist who very clearly feels comfortable in his own skin. The effect of this on “Christmas” is one of warmth and quiet confidence. Listening to “Christmas” is one step removed from gathering around a piano with cups of hot chocolate after an afternoon of sledding. Think Norman Rockwell with great piano chops. “Christmas” opens with one of Krippayne’s original tunes, the lively piano rocker with a ragtime feel, “Christmas Time Is Here Again.” His gritty vocals swing through the upbeat changes until things slow down at track’s end for a subdued look at the Real Reason. Very nicely done. Krippayne also takes a more classic approach with a few Christmas carols, the gentle piano accompanying his quiet vocals on “O Come, O Come Emmanuel” and “Away in a Manger,” the bridge especially lovely on the former. “The Christmas Song” is performed with a vocal ensemble supporting him beautifully with the tightest of vocals. The EP’s other Krippayne original is the romantic piano ballad “It Wouldn’t Be Christmas,” featuring once again his cozy tones, as warm as the proverbial mug of hot chocolate in front of a blazing fireplace. Things take a gospel turn on Krippayne’s soulful “Go Tell It on the Mountain,” his vocals grainy and bouncy over that solid piano line. Things slow down once more for the classic “Silent Night,” closing the EP smoothly with straightforward reverence. If you love the piano, warm vocals, and a classic take on Christmas music, you will thoroughly enjoy Scott Krippayne’s “Christmas,” available on his website and on his tour.
