Former member Melodie Crittenden returns briefly for the opening title track, and new member Amy Price is featured on the following song, Michael Card's "Gentle Healer." Both songs are presented in classic Selah style, well-orchestrated with moving arrangements and dramatic vocals. Things really heat up when Nichole Nordeman shows up for her song, the poetic and powerful "Glory," the strong vocals stirring your own heart toward glory. The sublime bridge of "I Will Sing of My Redeemer" sparkles with an angelic intensity thanks to the Selah-BarlowGirl combo, a surprisingly good fit.
Founding member Todd Smith wrote "Follow Jesus" in honor of his African homeland, calling it his "most personal" song yet. Its tribal beats and Nicole C. Mullen's enthusiastic contribution give a wonderful jam feel to this standout track. Things heat up significantly on the searing Russ Taff tune, "Ain't No Grave," Adam Crabb's rousing harmonica setting the stage for some smokin' vocals from brother Jason and the Selah team. Christy Nockels' poignant "Faithful One" serves well as a theme of sorts for the project, for the recurring message of God's faithful goodness permeates these sincere songs. The quiet vocals of Jill Phillips contrast nicely with the Selah powerhouse strength on "Sweet Jesus." "Bless the Broken Road" goes out on a classic note: the stirring "Softly and Tenderly" with Cynthia Clawson. Selah member Allan Hall said it best: "The record is 'us', but it's enough of a change to keep you excited." Selah's "Bless the Broken Road" releases August 8th from Curb Records.
