Staci Frenes' "Nothing Short of Amazing" is nothing short of surprising. Why haven't I heard her creative, pleasing pop before this, her 4th indie album?
I’m immediately drawn into the organic opener, “Amazing,” by its percolating rhythms and Frenes’ own straightforward vocals. She’s got a great warmth to her tone, and she wields it well in this congenial pop worship track. Her solid vocals fit the guitar-driven “Safe Place to Land” perfectly, and guitarist/co-writer Paul Buono’s strings greatly enhance the nuanced “Surprise Me.” I love the acoustic turn on “Imagine That,” Frenes’ low crooning and Buono’s pristine guitar work making this a standout track. “St. Mary’s” is both dramatic and delightful, co-writer Nate Sabin’s thick piano chords supporting her dreamy vocals beautifully. Frenes seems to have a way with other artists, as “Nothing Short of Amazing” features a bevy of great collaborators. (I’ve always wanted to say “bevy”…. do you think I pushed it?) It’s a part of what makes this album so delicious, along with the strong theme of encouragement that pours from these hooky songs. Must mention the upbeat pop track, “Right Now,” on the way out, with its intuitive and lively bass line. The airy, bright closer, “Reprieve,” reverberates with passionate worship, stirringly expressive of “deep calling to deep.“ Don’t make the same mistake I did: find Staci Frenes quickly at her website. You’ll be glad you did.
