State of Grace III, Christian classical music
Paul Schwartz is back with part three of his "State of Grace" series, mixing classic orchestra with modern percussion, subtle techno-vibes and rich vocal arrangements.

“State of Grace III” is more moody ambience, lavish orchestral and vocal arrangements, featuring the vocal stylings of longtime associates Lisbeth Scott (Chronicles of Narnia, Shrek) and Rebecca Luker (The Sound of Music, Secret Garden), bringing together the lavish talents of several heavy contributors. Schwartz alone is a classically-trained composer, creating another best-selling series, “Aria,” and a renowned conductor of Broadway shows. As a child in London, he sang in Westminster Abbey service every morning and listened to Pink Floyd at night. Both influences are heard in “State of Grace III,” from the ethereal opener “Christe Redemptor,” a Latin-versed techno-classical piece, to the gently moving “Lux Aeterna” and “…et Lux perpetua,” featuring the Japanese drums and lush strings. There is much to fascinate and draw you into “State of Grace III.”

There is rich diversity of movement and style here, from modern sonic stews (the pulsating beats of “Listen”), to small acoustic ensembles (the artful and moving “Center of my Heart”), to larger intricate orchestrations (the deeply textured “Somnium”). Schwartz lifts the Latin of old hymns and religious texts, placing them against modern ambient grooves to engage the listener with history and adventure. Lisbeth Scott’s lovely vocals stand up beautifully, as does the warmth of Rebecca Luker on the operatic “Salve Regina.”

Two tracks came across to me as deeply moving. The first is the wildly dreamy, moody “Agnus Dei,” with its rhythmic waves of vocal and orchestral movements. Very uplifting and encouraging. I also loved the tenderness of classical closer “Soledad.” Lucia Micarelli’s violin is especially evocative under Schwartz’s quiet acoustic piano. Together these artists have crafted a very eloquent expression of spirituality that I found quite irresistible. Open up your mind and heart to “State of Grace III” for an exquisite musical experience.
