In this series, Suite examines the process of becoming an indie artist, following the step by step process of the calling, preparing, and becoming of artist Lindsey Kane.
Indie artist Lindsey Kane is the perfect subject for Suite’s new series on the “Making of an Indie Artist.” A fiercely committed believer and a fresh new talent, Lindsey Kane is preparing to release her new album, “Move Me Aside.” I’ve heard a sneak preview of two tracks, enough to know that we will be hearing much more from this gifted singer/songwriter whose has the musical chops to excel in a variety of styles and a heart generous enough to share her story with other young artists. Suite begins its “Making of an Indie Artist” series with Part One of our interview with Lindsey Kane. Lindsey, reading your Bio (on website) really showed how long ago all this started. Your first encounter with the Lord was at eight, and it sounds like you’ve been steady with Him since then. When did you begin to sense that your life would involve singing for Him professionally? When I was about to start my junior year in college. It was the summer before my junior year and I was in North Carolina recording my second CD. I can remember everything like it happened five minutes ago. I was sitting in my hotel room watching TV and all of the sudden I felt the Lord drawing me into fellowship with Him. So I shut the TV off and laid flat on the floor, which probably wasn’t the cleanest of floors, but I laid down before God anyway. I instantly started balling my eyes out. It was like something completely overcame me. I couldn’t explain it, but for the fact that it was the Spirit of God. He descended on me and it was completely indescribable. But it was in that moment of intensity, in that moment of prayer that I heard the Lord call me into full-time music ministry. It wasn’t an audible voice, but it was spoken to my heart as clear as day and I haven’t doubted my calling since then. It was from the Lord and I knew in my heart that He was going to use me in huge ways through the music He had given me. It was so overwhelming that I wanted to leave college and start pursuing my calling! But I promised my parents I would graduate so I finished school and sang on the side. From that defining moment in that North Carolina hotel room, I knew. I knew I was created to bring glory to God through music. And I’ve been hooked ever since! What did the first steps in that process look like?I’m guessing you’re talking about the first step in the process of going out into full-time music ministry… so, if that is the case then the first step was definitely to say yes. The Lord called me and I answered Him. I said yes and I surrendered my life and my ministry and my passions to Him and what He wanted. I turned over everything to Him. My future, my fears, my everything. I started to sing more and more in college and build a community of people who would bring me into sing/perform/lead worship. I started building upon the foundation that God had laid for me and my ministry. Then when I graduated from college, I was able to step out in faith and pursue the music ministry full-time because God had been preparing the way for me all through college. So basically for me, the first step was stepping out of the boat. When I heard the call of God on my life, I stepped out of my comfort boat and stepped out into the deep uncharted waters to be with my Savior! Only by His grace did I not sink right then and there. Check back tomorrow for Part Two of our interviw with Lindsey Kane, and of our "Making of an Indie Artist" series as Suite continues its Salute to the Indie Artist! Lindsey will be talking about holding on to encouragement and offering words of advice to young artists who may be considering taking the same bold steps of faith. Click here for Part Two
