The three members of the Curtis Band from Tennessee lead worship together in their home church. It has to be said, they have the hearts of worshippers.
Frontman Andy Curtis sings lead and plays guitar (and periodically channels Third Day’s Mac Powell), wife Erica sings, and brother-in-law Mark McIntire sings and plays some sweet, sweet violin. They’ve only been playing together for about two years; “The Curtis Band” is their debut. Their sound is melodic rock and vertical lyrics, embellished nicely by producer Brent Hendrich’s guitar work and often thick programming. Hendrich scatters sonic delights throughout the ten tracks, most noticeably the percussive joys of “Passion,” which together with his nimble guitar makes the track a kind of electric prayer, and the edgy guitar riffs of “With All I Have.”
Standout tracks include “Wonderful Savior,” noteworthy for McIntire’s rich violin under the soaring vocals of Curtis on the catchy and worshipful chorus. McIntire opens both “You’re My Reason” and “Doxology” with his ear-catching taut violin, pinning you to the chair in anticipation.
Third Day fans will be mesmerized by “The Marks of The Cross,” an exuberant rocker. The song itself is hugely reminiscent of Third Day, but Curtis’ gritty vocals heighten the comparison hugely. The song’s passionate theme of bringing honor to God make this track an easy favorite. “The Curtis Band” closes out with an acoustic ballad, the quietly reverent “I’ll Live For Him.” Andy Curtis penned the majority of these songs, revealing himself as an able worshipper.
