Todd Agnew’s “Do You See What I See?” imagines the first Christmas without the benefit of 2,000 years of hindsight. It may be just the fresh perspective we need.

"Do You See What I See?" tells the Christmas story from the personal perspectives of the eyewitnesses to Christ's birth, retelling the story in the words of the innkeeper, the relatives of Christ, the Magi and the angels. Agnew's powerful musical reminds us of all they did not know that first holy season, and in the process helps us to step outside the flatness of our familiarity. These eleven tracks ponder the questions that quicken us spiritually by their consideration; "Did You Know" asks, 'How much heaven and how much earth were in this baby at his birth?'"

"Do You See What I See?" unfolds more like a musical than an album of Christmas songs, the movement from act to act building a fresh comprehension of the sacred story. Calling upon the sturdy support of artists like newcomer Joy Whitlock, Christy Nockels, Vince Lichlyter (Jonah 33), Mike Weaver, Anthony Evans, Shelley Jennings (Passion), and Michael O'Brien, Agnew himself moves in and out of the progressive story. Together they cast fresh light on the earth-shaking events so familiar to us. Joy Whitlock's bluesy innkeeper duet with Agnew aptly illustrates the world's indifference, over a bed of smoldering organ and flighty clarinet. The pure vocals of Christy Nockels' "Magnificat" quietly create an atmosphere of wondrous worship. Shelley Jennings' turn as Elizabeth has a similar effect, her soothing lullaby brimming with both heartbreak and melodic trust. It gentle surrender makes the Mike Weaver's celebratory song as Simeon all the more meaningful.

Agnew covers the sacred pronouncement of "God With Us" with full dramatic liscence, never more appropriate. Anthony Evans' soulful up-tempo "Glory to God" feels like a physical release when it hits, pumping up the energy and the joy vividly.

The familiar classic "In the First Light" is a multi-artist finale to this encouraging concept album, bringing the eyewitness testimonies to a dramatic close. Todd Agnew wanted to create more than a typical holiday album; his creativity has not failed him, enabling us all to take a fresh look at the meaning of Christmas. What better gift could we ask for? Don't miss "Do You See What I See?" releasing October 3, 2006.
