Tree63’s “Worship Volume One: I Stand for You” reminds me once again of everything that is great about good worship music.
Tree63 is made up of three South Africans: frontman and primary writer John Ellis (vocals, guitar, keys), Daniel Orenellas (bass, backing vocals), and Bobby Blazier (drums). "Worship Volume One: I Stand for You" includes four kickin' live tracks ("Treasure," "Joy," "King" and an amped up new version of the title track) from their 2005 Restored Tour. It is these live tracks that give this album its oomph, and it's dripping with oomph. These guys create an atmosphere of enthusiastic worship; they bring the party and direct it heavenward. The studio tracks also contain the signature Tree63 energy, rich with pounding rhythms, thundering guitars and sincere exuberance. They cover Matt Redman's "Nothing But the Blood" (with Matt himself joining on the vocals) and "All Over the World" and add in several new songs, including the sparkling "Great Kindness," a moving song of heartfelt gratitude, presented with some sensitive synth work and the best of Ellis' considerable vocals skills. Another standout is the marvelous song of surrender, "Have Your Way," its lyrics potent with honesty: "Though I don't feel You/ I will believe/ Take me, Lord, I pray/ Just have Your way with me." The project closes powerfully with what may be the most rousing rendition of "Amazing Grace" I've ever heard. This closer thunders with exhilaration and exemplifies exactly why Tree63 will always stand out in the crowded worship scene. "Worship Volume One: I Stand for You" is as good as it gets in the realm of sincere worship.
