The boys from Two Empty Chairs have put their heart and soul into their debut album, Brighter Day. They take alt pop-rock and infuse it with the word God has given them. This creates music like Matchbox 20 meets Stryper, with a style all their own thrown into the mix.
Using music to put forth a message is not a new concept, but it is a very effective one. Two Empty Chairs uses this platform to spread the Gospel. They do this for one main reason – that some might be saved.
When writing the songs for Brighter Day, the band had an audience in mind. Cliff Preston, guitarist and lead singer, says, “Our hearts have been heavy for young people, and people in general, who have a feeling of hopelessness and despair.”
So they have good intentions and a heart for hurting people. But all of the heartfelt actions and good intentions don’t add up to much if your product doesn’t pass muster. Does Two Empty Chairs deliver on Brighter Day?
The level of talent Two Empty Chairs bring rivals any band that graces the airwaves. Preston’s voice is spot on and he’s more than fair on the ole six-string. Seth Bradham thunders away on the drums, working in seamless sync with Wes Hymer's bass, while Josh Bryant makes the guitar sing.
Whether they are rocking hard, like on “Lifelight”, or taking things slow, as they do on “Breakaway” and “Glory”, Two Empty Chairs step up and show that they can play with the big boys. Songs like “In Your Hands” and “Two Days Left” show the diversity of the band. They draw you in with the gentle verses and then punch the choruses home.
No matter how talented a band is, the team they work with is vital to putting out a good CD. Two Empty Chairs have enlisted a top-notch group to work on Brighter Day.
Barry Blair proves he learned a lot while playing guitar with Audio Adrenaline. Blair brings out the best of each guy in Two Empty Chairs. He’s not alone in the studio though. He brings in the talents of Skid Mills to do the mixing. Mills has worked with artists such as Third Day and Jennifer Knapp. The talent of the band blended with the talent of Blair and Mills makes Brighter Day a work of art.
Two Empty Chairs deals with some heavy topics on Brighter Day. It’s a delicate balance that could fall on either side. If they make too light of things, people will feel they are being mocked. If they delve too deep, it could bring every one down rather than raise them up.
Brighter Day deftly rides the razor’s edge. It speaks into the lives of those that are down and lifts them up. Then it points them to the One that will solve their problems.
