V3 Interview, Christian gospel music
EMI Gospel released the self-titled debut of V3 this month, putting the Vinson sisters, LaToya, Sacha, and Shelley, on the gospel map with their own sweet style.

The Vinson sisters take the gospel sound and make it all their own, as the Suite review noted. We were thrilled they were able to give us time for a chat this week.

Suite: Thanks for the great sounds on the album and for taking the time to answer these. Growing up in Atlanta, with a pastor-dad and a mom who sung professionally, what artists did you most enjoy listening to? Who influenced you most professionally? Spiritually?

V3: Growing up we listened to alot of gospel because we weren't allowed to have secular music in the house. So we listened to artists like Andre Crouch, Commissioned, BeBe and CeCe Winans, Witness, Clark Sisters, and Take 6. Our mother, Carolyn Vinson, is also a song writer and so she was the one that we looked up to the most! Our mother and father were and still are our greatest spiritual influences because they truly live what they sing and preach about, and they are wonderful examples of what true Christians are like.

Suite: When did you first know you wanted to sing professionally for the Lord?

V3: Well, our parents always instilled a Biblical foundation in us and told us how important our gifts are. Growing up we were singing all the time and when we branched off as V3 we couldn't imagine doing anything else but singing for God. And it was definitely because of that foundation.

We didn't think that we would be professional singers at first, but LaToya kept writing great songs and then in 1997 we got a chance to do a demo and it was like we were realizing then that this could really go far and maybe we could do it professionally.

Suite: The three of you co-wrote some of the songs on the new self-titled album. Which of you is most eager to develop her writing chops? What is the message you most want to communicate?

V3: LaToya is already a great writer! She has been writing since her early teen years and Sacha and I (Shelley) are still trying to develop our "chops". You know, I really enjoy writing stories and poetry, but in the long run when we do write songs together we all brainstorm and then we write seperately and then Sacha and I will turn what we wrote in to LaToya and she'll put everything together and make it into a great song! But we are all wanting to get better and better at it.

We like to tell relevant stories with our music and we basically talk about our own experiences as well as other peoples that we may know. We know that the solution to any problem is Jesus Christ and that is the strongest message in our music. It doesn't matter what you've done or what the problem is, God loves you and He has the answer to your situation.

Suite: Could you share a bit about your involvement with the Boys and Girls Club?

V3: Sure! We have been chosen to join the Single Parent Initiative Campaign. It is a wonderful program for young people and we're basically showing the kids a more positive side to the music industry. So we will be visiting Boys and Girls Clubs all over America and getting a chance to meet and talk with the young people there. We are very excited!

Suite: What are your long term goals for music ministry?

V3: We want to continue writing and we're working on learning how to play different instruments. We want to be able to produce our own music and hopefully mentor other young people that want to get into the business.

Another thing is to definitely keep the ministry part first because that is what it's all about and that's what we're here for!

Sounds like V3 is doing all the right things for the right reasons. Pick up a copy of their debut album today.
