And when it comes to music ministry, it's the heart that counts, right? That's what comes across strongest in our conversation, as you will see.
"Bravo God" came out in fall of 2005. My review was first posted that summer:
Christian music has long enjoyed a rich legacy of female rockers and Jamie Smith is right in the heart of that proud pack. With all of the power rock chops of Melissa Etheridge, the raw vocal gutsiness of Rita Springer, and the deep passion of a genuine God-worshipper, Smith's newest CD, the wonderfully titled "Bravo God," roars out of the gate with nine new originals and two classic covers. The whole project reeks of strength and raw passion; if you like your worship intense and true you're going to want to get your hands on "Bravo God" and soon.
"Love Like You Love" sets a tone of pure rock groove with its fat hooks and upbeat chorus; the same spirit enlivens the fast-paced rendition of "How Great Thou Art," a gutsy and joyous interpretation. Smith's vocals have always been uniquely expressive, to my mind, and they haven't lost any of their power to stir. Some of her lyrics reach into your gut and insistently tug on your spirit. Not a bad gift for a worship leader.
The songs are beautifully set, leading from joyous celebration into more reflective offerings at a perfect pace. The superb arrangements of the title track crackle with the unexpected, an ideal fit for this take-off on Eugene Peterson's Message version of Psalm 29:1: "Bravo, God, bravo." By the time the album's tender closing tones leave you, your heart has been softened and laid bare. Give yourself time to really take part in the delightful journey that is "Brave God."
